This Week's Memory Verse

Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Ephesians 6:18

Devotional

As you grow in your faith and in these and other spiritual disciplines, you’ll start to think about what the next step is. No matter how long you’ve been a Christ follower, every one of us is called to take what we’ve learned, whether a lot or a little, and share it with someone else. To be a disciple literally means a learning follower. In the ancient world, teaching was done through shoulder to shoulder training in a skill or craft. Instead of merely getting a lesson, the student would receive a life. They learned not only how to do their chosen profession, but also how to be. In the same way, Jesus calls us to his side to watch and learn and try it for ourselves. He shows us and in turn, asks us to show someone else.

This call is known best as the great commission, the last words from a teacher to his students: Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 NIV

He came to show us what to do and then he released us to show others, the students become the teachers. Making disciples, that is a learning disciple, means showing others what God has taught us. It means throwing open the door to our home, inviting people in and doing life together. What better way to see how to live a life like Christ in our homes than to let someone come beside us as we raise our families and work in our community. You don’t have to give access to everyone, but look for who God is asking you to be available to.

What have you learned that you can pass along? Who is in a season or place in life where you have been?

Think On This Verse:
Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. 1 Corinthians 11:1 NIV

Ask and Answer:
Who can you give access to my life and allow them to learn beside you as you follow Christ? What has God already taught you that someone else needs right now? Who is in a season or a place where you have already been? What can you teach them? As you make disciples, how you can you keep following the example of Christ?

Prayer

Lord, the call you’ve given all believers is a great one. Show me who it is you desire me to share about you and to help them grow in their faith and understanding of you. Continue to teach me as I teach others. In your name, Amen.
